Bio

Suryani Liauw has actively taken part in Indonesian film industry since 2003, mostly as a program manager and producer. She was involved in Jakarta International Film Festival (JiFFest), ECCO Films Indonesia, Europe on Screen film festival, In-Docs and kineforum—an alternative film screening program, initiated by the Film Committee of the Jakarta Arts Council. On film production, she took part in various film productions, both fiction and documentary, for local and foreign companies/filmmakers, such as “Jermal” (2008), “Red Umbrella” (2010), “Dino” (2013) and “Stories of Recovery: 10 Years after Tsunami” (2014). She is a strong believer that film is a powerful communication tool which has a strong potential to influence and inspire people. Consequently, she concentrates on developing new possibilities to work with film and aims to expand her network beyond film communities/industry. In 2018, Suryani and her colleagues—Rival Ahmad and Ardi Yunanto—initiated BesiBerani, a social interference initiative through film medium and created a program that combines film and facilitation methods as a tool for the audience to discuss and experience a variety of opinions, views, feelings and thoughts about diversity, justice and social inclusion in daily life. Since 2019, she was responsible to lead and manage the impact distribution program for a feature-length documentary “Pesantren” as impact producer.
