Bio
I am the Co-founder and Creative Director of Skylight, a not-for-profit media organization that for over 30 years has combined cinematic arts with the quest for justice to inspire the defense of human rights. Our films and programs strengthen social justice movements and catalyze collaborative networks of artists and activists. I am the Director of the Sundance Special Jury award winning “When the Mountains Tremble”; the Executive Producer of the Academy Award winning “Witness to War”; and the Director of “State of Fear: The Truth About Terrorism”, which has been translated into 47 languages and broadcast in 154 countries as well as winning the Overseas Press Club Award for Best Reporting in any Medium about Latin America. My film “Granito: How to Nail a Dictator”, was awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship, and was used as key forensic evidence in the genocide trial against Efraín Ríos Montt in Guatemala. My third film in the Guatemalan trilogy, “500 YEARS” had its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival, was released theatrically, was broadcast on PBS’ POV series and streamed on Amazon Prime's Festival Stars. Each of these films have had multiyear outreach and impact campaigns, companion digital websites, study guides and multiple language versions. I’m currently in production on “Borderland”, a documentary that investigates the US border-industrial complex as well as the bravery of undocumented immigrants’ who are building a rights movement for dignity and respect in resistance to official U.S. policies. I’m a member of the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences, Writers Guild of America, and the International Documentary Association and have designed and led the inaugural Hedgebrook Women’s Documentary Film Lab and Retreat at the Hedgebrook Women’s Writers Colony. http:skylight.is
