Bio
Kazi Arefin Ahmed is an independent filmmaker and communication consultant based in Dhaka, Bangladesh. His work explores migration, climate justice, postcolonial identity, and human rights, with a strong focus on amplifying voices from the Global South. He collaborates with organizations such as the United Nations, the European Union, and AFP Media Services to produce impactful audiovisual campaigns that inspire action.
His debut feature project in development, Opekkha, an intimate exploration of migration, family bonds, and belonging, has already earned critical acclaim, winning the IEFTA and Docedge Kolkata Awards at Dhaka DocLab 2023 and continues to develop under international mentorship. His short nonfiction, Could You Be Free Yet Locked In?, won the prestigious FIPRESCI Award, along with several international accolades. He was a selected participant in the INTRO:DOX at CPH:DOX 2025, a curated platform for emerging global nonfiction voices. Kazi also serves as a programmer at the Bangladesh Liberation Docfest and mentors young filmmakers through the Liberation War Museum Film Centre. Across all his work, he is committed to building inclusive, ethical, and participatory storytelling spaces across cultures, borders, and communities.
