Bio

Kara Magsanoc-Alikpala is a producer and broadcast journalist. She co-founded the production company Storytellers International Inc. and is the President of Filipino Documentary Society (FilDocs). She produced “Delikado (2022)” a documentary on land defenders and illegal logging in the Philippines. It has won the Sustainable Future Award at the Sydney film festival 2022, the Best Feature at the Newburyport Documentary Film Festival 2022 and a Special Mention, Best Documentary Feature Film at the Asia Pacific Screen Awards. It broadcast on POV on the Public Broadcasting Service. She also produced 11,103 (2022), a film on survivors of Martial Law under the dictatorship of Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Kara was also one of the producers of “Call Her Ganda (2018)” (Call Her Beautiful). The film earned over a dozen Grand Jury Best Documentary and Audience Choice Awards as well as several critics’ awards and nominations including a 2019 GLAAD Media Award. She produced “Batas Militar (1997)” (Martial Law). To date, it has been the highest rated documentary broadcast on Philippine Television. The documentary swept all major awards in the Philippines. It was a finalist at the International Documentary Festival in Amsterdam (IDFA), and a bronze medalist at the New York Festival. Kara is based in Manila, Philippines. She is a contributing producer for ARD German TV, ARD German Radio, Cable News Network (CNN) Hong Kong. She has produced documentaries for the History Channel, and the Australian Broadcasting Company. She has reported for the Public Broadcasting Service and Voice of America. She has been jury for the Emmy Awards, News and Documentary category since 2020. Kara is also a cancer patient advocate and is the Founding President of the ICanServe Foundation, a non profit that institutionalizes breast cancer control programs in local governments. She is Vice President of the Cancer Coalition of the Philippines that lobbied for the passage of the National Integrated Cancer Control Act of 2019.
