Bio

Carolina Machado Oliveira is an award-winning independent documentary filmmaker, educator, and impact producer born and raised in Brazil. With over 15 years of experience working across Latin America, the UK, and Europe, her films have been showcased at festivals internationally. Carolina’s work spans documentary filmmaking, multimedia projects, and film distribution, with a commitment to using media to elevate underrepresented voices and stories that drive meaningful change. She has collaborated with high-profile clients like Red Bull Media House, Dogwoof and non-profits such as Amazon Watch and Survival International, producing content that sheds light on urgent environmental and human rights issues. Over the past five years, Carolina has worked closely with Indigenous communities in Rondônia and the Indigenous territory of Xingu, Brazil, supporting the production and distribution of audiovisual content that preserves cultural heritage and addresses challenges such as climate justice and displacement. In addition to her filmmaking career, Carolina is a Senior Lecturer in Factual at Bournemouth University, where she empowers students to use media as a tool for advocacy and social transformation. Her research interests include documentary filmmaking, auto-ethnography, and transnational narratives, with a particular focus on identity, culture and agency in first-person storytelling. Carolina is also a member of the jury for justice-centred festivals like the Novella Film Festival, bringing her expertise and passion for impactful storytelling to the evaluation of socially conscious films.
